Live #31: Are We There Yet? How to trust your inner GPS

YouTube player

The other day I picked up my precious, 6 year old grandson, Blake, from school…which I LOVE to do!  He attends a school for children with autism which is typically a 20-30 minute drive.

As usual, I pulled up my maps app to check the traffic status for the route I normally take. Unfortunately, I saw a LOT of red roads!  Siri proclaimed, “There is a 15 minute delay due to an accident. You are still on the fastest route. You will arrive at…..”

At that point, I had the choice to either try an alternate route and hope for the best, or stick to the route that Siri indicated as the fastest route to Blake’s school.

Well, the supposedly fastest way seemed painfully slow. The cars on the highway in front of me were barely moving, so I decided to outsmart Siri and exited the highway – which I quickly regretted!

My little unadvised adventure added an EXTRA 10 minutes to my trip, which made me late picking up Blake. Ugh! I was so irritated with myself that I went with my perception instead of my proven, trustworthy source.

Yep, although the pace seemed slow, with persistence and staying the course in bumper-to-bumper traffic, I would have arrived in a more timely manner.

The same can be said about pursuing goals in our life….whether it is changing careers, navigating relationships, healing emotional hurts and traumas, or even recovering from addiction. Once we decide on what we want or where we want to go, the road that we need to travel might be slow and frustrating.

Other people might appear to get in our way and keep us from going faster. But they, too, are on their own journey and just trying to reach their destination.

We may feel like we are not making any progress.  But if we stay the course, we will get there when the time is right.

So what happens if we take an early exit thinking it will be better only to get lost or stuck? How do we stay motivated when things get tough?

That’s what this week’s Live @ 1:05 was about. I shared tips on how to stay the course and trust the process of your own journey while honoring your inherent worth with self-compassion.

If you know someone who would benefit from this, please share!
