Live #41: The Power & Purpose of Emotional Scars

by | Dec 6, 2021 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Like many Americans this past September 11, my heart felt the heaviness of the tragic events from 2001. Just as others did, I reflected on where I was and how I felt on that unforgettable day and remembered the families whose lives were forever changed that day.

To honor their pain and loss, as well as the fortitude of our country, I replaced my red, white, and blue Texas flag with America’s Star-Spangled Banner.

As I watched The Stars and Stripes wave in the late summer breeze, I saw the rips and and tears it had suffered from the our last storm here in the Lone Star State.

Yep, Old glory looked pretty rough and frayed and I considered taking her back down for repairs.

Then I paused.

Once again, I reflected on September 11, 2001, and how in spite of the still present grief, wounds, and scars those families and our country have endured, we are still standing!

I let it be. I flew my flag proudly, frayed and all. Those rips and tears were just a part of my flag’s story.

In that moment, I realized I was a lot like that flag.

My scars and imperfections, both inside and out, tell a story of my life’s experiences over the last 50 years…the hard work and fun, the injuries, surgeries, the childhood and adult trauma, the addiction, etc.

While some scars are visible (after all I am a Professional Patient…lol) many are not. The invisible mental and emotional ones are the most painful and have the power to disrupt my life without warning.

At times I think those imperfections, wounds and scars, disqualify me from stepping into my purpose, speaking my truth, and making a difference in this world.

Although the voice of my inner critic shouts those thoughts loudly inside my head, today I know those thoughts are invalid and only grow if I feed them.

Yes, I am frayed with scars…but in many ways, I am stronger than I have ever been!

My scars are evidence of my resilience and tenacity. They shout “I am a strong woman in recovery!”

As one of my favorite songs, This is Me, from The Greatest Showman says:

“……I am brave, I am bruised

I am who I’m meant to be, this is me.

Look out ’cause here I come.

And I’m marching on to the beat I drum.

I’m not scared to be seen,

I make no apologies, this is me!”

And that’s what this week’s Live @ 1:05 is about. I will share tips on how to use the scars of your life to live with power and purpose.

And as always, if you miss the live broadcast you can watch the recording and other live shows here

If you now someone who would benefit from this, please share.
